My Inspiration ans Process

Posted on January 2, 2018 at 5:15 PM Comments comments (0)

As I progress on my artist path, I realize that people are interested in knowing two things about me: my inspiration and my process. So here it is in words. Please bear with my poor english.

The news, the weather outside, the latest hike I took with my friends, my latest travel, the latest event in my life, the early and contemporary expressionist painters, these are certainly stronger influencers.

There is nothing that you do not experience yourself.

I should probably be more impermeable to my environment to become more constant but the reality is different. We all are constantly drawn in different directions and sometimes the desire to experience it all is too strong to make one direction a priority.

The process is more complicated. So for the benefit of simplicity I am going to talk about how I create my non-objective paintings.

My canvas is laying on the floor or set on an easel. I choose my tool, probably a homemade palette knife, I begin covering the canvas with a random color or the color I want to be the accent color. I focus on being the most relaxed as possible and begin spreading new layers with intuitive and energetic gestures. Each of my strokes is soaked in the emotions that built the artist I am today. Love, joy, sadness and frustration are invisible tools that animate my hand, my brush, my palette knife or my rag. Then comes the technique and control learned from many years of painting the trained eye that corrects the composition.

In the process comes texture I choose to ignore or reinforce.

The goal is to work until colors and composition are talking to each other in an elegant language. As I paint I sometimes imagine ideas being exchanged around a table. The meeting comes to an end when the early chaos finally transforms itself in a constructive proposition an elegant painting that will receive critics and approvals.
